The simple, unadorned grilled cheese sandwich is a classic. Its crispy, cheesy simplicity is a thing of beauty, but with delicious additions like avocado, tomato, ham, onions, multiple cheeses, pickles, eggs, and/or bacon the grilled cheese is transformed into something truly spectacular.
What are your favorite toppings to put on a grilled cheese sandwich?

A thin layer of paprika taste and a couple of capers take grilled (and slightly burnt in the process) halloumi to a whole new level.

Years ago I found an online recipe for Grilled Cheese with Caramelized Onions. Prepared the sandwiches (and a low-sodium Tomato-Basil Soup) for a wedding rehearsal supper and later for our annual church retreat’s Friday evening supper. Suffice it to say that I am no longer allowed to try anything different for those retreat suppers! Very simple spin on traditional grilled cheese — but the sweet onions, caramelized in REAL butter (ditch the margarine for this one!) really make this recipe a classic. The more onions, the merrier. It’s just a trial trying to wait for the onions to caramelize; they smell so good and you know they’re gonna taste even better!
Grilled rye bread, with smoked greyure , fresh basil pesto, creme fraiche, hot Dijon, crisp engish cucs,
Salt and pepper. Literally to die for……..yum
I like to add artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes and pesto with added parmesan in the crust – decadent!
