There’s been a deluge of less than scientific findings about what your cocktail of choice says about you, including David Wondrich’s rather fine write-up. This intel is especially important when you’re on a first date, since all it takes is one curious order at the bar to make your courtesan question you.
My 60-year-old mother recently joined the online dating scene. Her go-to is a vodka martini (which she pronounces vodk-er), straight up, and she asks the bartender to just wave the vermouth over the glass. She likes to pantomime this motion. I think her choice implies that she’s a sophisticate who likes to get buzzed efficiently. Perhaps too efficiently.
My preferences have always been directly determined by the boy I’m with. Pinot Grigio if he’s purportedly a gentleman; whatever microbrew is on draught if I’m pretending to be laid-back; and a vodka soda (or three) if the company isn’t stimulating.
Stereotypes aside, if your date seems promising, the Old Fashioned makes the right impression. If you’re a female, your ability to drink whiskey will likely come as a turn on. If you’re a male, your choice to not drink your whiskey straight will show that you have some restraint. It’s smooth, subtly sexy, not fussy, and has enough kick that you won’t accidentally down it. If you want to practice drinking this at home, try our recipe for a classic Old Fashioned.
