Where can you never get a reservation, but always wished you could?

Wink is one of those very special places in town where exceptional ingredients meet fine wine and an eclectic atmosphere forming one spectacular and magical experience. The restaurant is small with only a handful of tables, so make reservations early. If you can’t get into the real thing, belly up to the wine bar next door and order appetizers from the Wink menu. — Mandy Begley, Home with Mandy

What’s the best spot for a picnic, and where can we go to stock up on supplies?

Central Market has good picnic fare. You can spread out near their duck/turtle pond or head over to Zilker Park/Town Lake instead. Don’t buy at the café. Shop inside the store and pack it all up. There’s a much better selection inside, including a really great soup and salad bar. — Blythe Jewell, Kidding Around Austin

APP EXCLUSIVE: Extreme Home Charcuterie

The full-length feature version of Extreme Home Charcuterie, by Lise Funderburg, appears in the current issue of Gourmet Live. Download the free Gourmet Live app to get this story and more.

Lise Funderburg ©2011

When she agreed to tie the knot, she didn’t mean the one at the end of the soppressata. Life with a sausage maker, from bacon curing to venison sawing.

Ours was a classic romance: First came love, then came marriage, then came deer liver prosciutto held together with hardware-store zip ties.

Allow me to explain: Among my husband John’s many enthusiasms is cooking. John is fearless in the kitchen. There isn’t a restaurant entrée he won’t reverse-engineer, and there isn’t a Cook’s Illustrated premise he isn’t willing to test. He’s an architect by training but an explorer at heart. In fact, when I met him, part of what attracted me was his mix of adventurousness and agency. He was a man who got stuff done, who showed up when things were easy and when they were hard, and who had hobbies he pursued with a passion and vigilance I found equal parts reassuring and irresistible. So it was no surprise, a few years into nuptial bliss, that when our neighbor—let’s just call her The Instigator—called from a yard sale to say she’d found a smoker and wouldn’t John like to keep it in our driveway (instead of hers), he immediately began formulating plans on how to put the well-worn (but only $25!) contraption to use. Then it’s time to satisfy your sweet tooth with a brand new recipe just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. Pots of Gold

The full-length feature version of Pots of Gold, by Serena Bass, appears in the current issue of Gourmet Live. Download the free Gourmet Live app to get this story and more.

Bring on the stainless steel and get the copper polished because we’re arming you with the ultimate plan to streamline your saucepans. From stockpots and sauciers to Dutch ovens and ridged griddles, entertaining guru Serena Bass breaks down the can’t-miss pots and pans for your collection.

With everyday pans the most critical components are the handles and knobs. If they get hot, you get burnt. How can any manufacturer allow such a thing? So, before all else check that the handles will stay cool. Then there’s the weight and balance factor: I would never order a pan online without first checking how it actually feels. Think: if it’s heavy in the shop, how much more so when full of minestrone! Sometimes the handles cut into your palm or are too long, and sometimes a sauté pan is just too heavy to flip a stir-fry easily. I prefer to test in a shop, then order online as I often get a better price and don’t have to schlep.

What is the perfect diet? In the latest issue of Gourmet Live we take you to the island of Ikaria, where inhabitants of a small Greek village are living well into their 90s.
So how did it come to pass that this isolated, mountainous, poor island, far from the political and social mainstream, might hold a key to man’s eternal quests for longevity and health? Ikaria’s natives are 30 percent more likely than Americans to reach the age of 90; cancer rates on the island are 20 percent lower, and heart disease about 50 percent lower than in the United States. Ikarians also have almost no dementia … Certainly the nutritionally rich, “poor” diet that defines the Ikarian table is one key to longevity, but can urbanites in far off places like New York learn anything from it?

Now in the Store: A Taste of St. Patrick’s Day

Download the free Gourmet Live app for recipes, feature stories, special collections and more.

While St. Patrick’s Day may make your thoughts turn to partying more so than to the patron saint, we’ve decided there’s no reason why you can’t drink your Guinness and eat it, too. So step away from the green beer, and set your sights on our brand new Taste of St. Patrick’s Day menu.

Our menu of small bites, or Irish “tapas,” can be prepared up to four days, or a mere four hours, in advance, and it starts off with Smoked Salmon Toasts drizzled with Malt Vinegar Syrup. You’ll then taste your way through traditional Golden Colcannon Pie, a classic mix of mashed potatoes and cabbage that we bind with an egg to make for easy eating in the form of wedges.

With the king of Irish starches checked off your list, head for homemade Irish soda bread cubed and rebaked into individual ramekins as our creamy Farmhouse Cheese and Caraway Soda Bread Puddings—two recipes in one, and well worth the effort. As you sit back with a cold one in hand, you’ll be feasting your eyes on a plate of glistening Guinness-Glazed Lamb Chops. And you’ll be licking your fingers in anticipation of the sweet finale, Irish Coffee Sundaes with Caramel Whiskey Sauce and Coffee Nut Crisp.

It’s the last day to earn and sample our St. Patrick’s Day-themed Reward, so download the free Gourmet Live app for the menu plus entertaining tips, intriguing reads and more.

The History of … St. Patrick’s Day & Corned Beef

As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, many images come to mind: leprechauns, rainbows, four-leaf clovers, and on the dinner table, a heaping platter of corned beef and cabbage. But how authentic really is this “Irish dish”? Take a look back in history to discover why you won’t find corned beef on the menu this St. Patrick’s Day – at least not in Ireland.

Corned beef—or salt-cured beef—popularly paired with cooked cabbage, has become a familiar centerpiece of St. Patty’s Day feasts in the U.S. But this dish is more Irish-American than Irish. In fact, back in the 17th century when the celebration of patron Saint Patrick of Ireland first became an official holiday, pork and bacon were the only affordable meats among most Irish, and beef was considered a rare delicacy.

    APP EXCLUSIVE: Shut Up, Locavores

The below feature, Shut Up, Locavores by Pavia Rosati, appears in the current issue of Gourmet Live. Download the free Gourmet Live app to get this story and more.

Photo by Yellow Dog Productions / Getty Images

When your urge to eat close to home morphs from worthy pursuit to messianic mission, watch out: You’ve become a locabore.

For those of us who came of age in the latter half of the 20th century, ours was a food culture of Hungry Man gents and Lean Cuisine ladies. Dinner was served on TV trays, the opening strains of Love Boat whirling to a crescendo as we dug into tins of Chef Boyardee topped with a bold soupçon of Ragú. Our mothers were the supermarket swamis, who powered our mornings with Oreos dunked in chocolate milk and sent us off into the world armed with snack packs of saltines and cheese best described as “orange,” crafted lovingly by assembly line in God-Knows-Where, U.S.A.

Our sweet mommies. Their simple, stupid times. Continue reading

    Star Bytes: Ivanka Trump

Ivanka Trump is no mere Daughter-of-The-Donald. She has made a name for herself as a businesswoman, jewelry designer, socialite, author and as a judge on her father’s hit NBC show, The Celebrity Apprentice. Though she’s a world traveler with access to the top restaurants, the heiress confesses she still loves to shop for her own groceries and cook dinner at home.

My guilty pleasure has always been mozzarella sticks. I also love toasted salt bagels and cream cheese—double-toasted. And I love caviar. I’ve loved it since I was a little kid, and I like to treat myself to it once in a while.
